About the European Foundation for Urology - EFU

The medicine of the 21st century is increasingly influenced by socio-political, in particular economic, conditions which lead to the integration of the healing and alleviation of diseases into the algorithms of market-based financial systems.

This development is intensified not only by cost explosion in the development and application of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, but also by demographic change in our population structure. Implicitly, this leads to the questioning of an ethics that has made the well-being of the patient a primacy of our collective consciousness for centuries. In particular, the young and healthy performers of our society, increasingly legitimated by the media influence of the political parties, are increasingly prepared to accept this perspective of “financial feasibility” of health.

The European Foundation for Urology contributes to the maintenance of “salus aegroti suprema lex” by the voluntary solidarity of its donors with patients whose medical treatment would otherwise be unfeasible. This goal is achieved on the one hand by the direct, appropriate support of the patients, on the other by the individual selective training of doctors from other national and international institutions.

The subject of urology is confronted with diseases of patients of all age classes, from the newborn to the elderly, who are very often able to heal in the case of appropriate therapy. Examples include congenital malformations, accident sequences, tumors and functional disorders of organs. Nevertheless, the subject of urology is based not least on intensive national and international collegiality and academic exchange of experience.

For these reasons, the EFU was founded in Heidelberg, Germany in 2005 as a charity foundation thanks to a generous donation.
